LED Lighting Creates Impressive Results for Sports Hall in Scotland

LEDs are a winning lighting solution for elite sports facilities, providing high-quality, energy-efficient illumination that supports an inspiring environment. LED specialist Earlsmann recently designed new sports hall lighting for sportscotland’s Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre. The new LEDs provide the capability to host national-level competition, and achieve energy savings of 100,000 kWh a year.

Replacing existing lighting with LEDs is a great investment

Earlsmann responded to a public tender from sportscotland, the national agency for sport in Scotland, which was seeking an LED lighting upgrade for the sports hall at its Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre.  The Centre is a residential facility, offering world-class amenities for training, development and competitions.

The Centre’s multi-use hall is 38m x 35m in size, providing up to eight badminton courts, and can be split into two halves using curtains. Other key sports include table tennis, basketball and volleyball. The existing lighting comprised 90 250W induction luminaires. Some of these were placed directly over badminton courts, creating glare and impeding visibility. The lighting was providing light levels of just 300 lux, far below the levels required for professional training and competition. sportscotland asked Earlsmann to provide a lighting design capable of providing 1,000 lux for national play and competition, with controls allowing dimming for community sport.

Developing a bespoke LED lighting design to optimise light levels

For the new scheme, Earlsmann used a combination of 54 180W and 36 150W midi-bay luminaires from Venture Lighting. The solution provides comfort and safety for all users, with the ability to switch off the lighting directly over the courts to reduce glare and the addition of wire guards to protect lighting units against ball strikes. Earlsmann modelled the scheme to ensure compliance with sportscotland guidelines.

All the new LED luminaires include dimming capability, so that lighting levels can be easily adjusted for all uses – from 1,000 lux for competitions, right down to 300 lux for normal community play. The lighting is controlled using a wireless solution from Casambi, eliminating the need to install complex additional wiring. At the touch of a button, the lighting can be set to achieve the optimum balance between performance and energy savings. Both halves of the sports hall lighting can be controlled separately to provide maximum flexibility of use.

Achieving impressive energy savings and elite-level performance with LED lighting

The new lighting immediately started to generate impressive energy savings compared to the previous scheme, with energy use dropping from around 145,000Whr/year to around 43,000kWhr/year. This will provide a return on sportscotland’s investment in just 2.2 years, and save 54 tonnes of carbon a year. In addition, the LEDs have a longer lifespan, reducing ongoing maintenance costs. Athletes using the centre are enjoying excellent visibility, reduced glare through better luminaire placement, and greater flexibility in choosing light levels.
