New LED lighting helps local authority to meet carbon reduction targets
With momentum to respond to the climate emergency continuously building around the world, LED lighting offers a way to reduce carbon emissions while providing bright, adaptable illumination. Mid Devon District Council (MDDC) has recently re-fitted three leisure centres with energy-efficient LEDs. The new lighting provides a brighter environment for taking part in sport, cuts energy use by up to £50,000 a year, and supports MDDC’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
ASD Lighting and Earlsmann – a strong partnership for LED expertise
MDDC engaged well-respected UK lighting manufacturer ASD Lighting to upgrade lighting across the three sites in all indoor areas, along with further fittings outdoors around the buildings and car parks. ASD contacted Tiverton-based LED specialist, Earlsmann Lighting Limited, to support the project by providing specialist expertise and supplying bespoke lighting for the swimming pools at the Exe Valley and Lords Meadow centres.
Using Relux modelling to create effective lighting schemes
Using Relux simulation software, Earlsmann modelled lighting designs for both swimming pools, and for the poolside changing area at Exe Valley. The Relux modelling confirmed that the lighting scheme is compliant with CIBSE guidelines. For both pools the designs exceeded the minimum requirements of >200 lux and >0.5 uniformity (CIBSE LG4), which ASD and Earlsmann agreed with MDDC as being the most suitable for its requirements.
Maximising lighting lifespan through use of chlorine-resistant LED units
Earlsmann selected its Spalding LED flood light, which has been specifically designed for high-chlorine environments to reduce chlorine-related decay. The Spalding luminaire is extremely versatile, as the output can be set precisely to help achieve the best possible level of uniformity across a large area.
Adding value through updated emergency lighting.
Earlsmann took the opportunity during on-site surveys to review the existing emergency lighting provision. Earlsmann’s in-house designers then modelled an updated scheme, using a high output emergency light to achieve the current standard of 5 lux across the pool and surrounding areas.
New LED lighting creates carbon savings from day one
The lighting provided by ASD and Earlsmann is already helping MDDC to achieve its carbon reduction targets. Over the life of the assets, CO2 emissions will be cut by 520 tonnes, with an annual reduction of up to £50,000 in electricity charges, as well as lower maintenance costs. The client is extremely pleased with the new lighting, with Andrew Busby, Corporate Manager for Property, Leisure and Climate Change at MDDC, commenting that: “Decarbonising MDDC’s assets is one milestone along our journey to becoming net zero… the completion of this work is fantastic news and a positive step for us in achieving our climate and sustainability goals.”
