Schools are continually under pressure to manage budgets, with energy costs increasingly coming under scrutiny. With LED lighting offering guaranteed energy savings of up to 60%, investing in LEDs can make a real difference.
Trinity School in Bexley, south-east London, recently worked with NCS Technology and Earlsmann to upgrade its lighting. It is now on track to save over £400,000 during the lifetime of the new LED lighting.
Trinity School is part of the Trinitas Academy Trust group of schools. The Trust did not have the capital available to fund the whole LED lighting project. However, it recognised that the quality of the new LED lighting and potential for substantial long-term savings would justify the initial cost of installation.
NCS was able to advise Trinitas on potential funding sources and identified Asset Finance and Management (AFM) as a partner to provide finance to enable investment in LED lighting. AFM modelled lease funding for the project based on savings from energy usage and maintenance costs compared to the original fluorescent lighting, delivering an immediate ‘bottom line’ surplus to the Trust from day one of the new lighting being operational.
Earlsmann – providing ‘lighting as a service’ from concept to completion
Earlsmann’s ethos is to provide lighting as a service, offering comprehensive support across all stages from design to installation. It undertook a follow-up survey to confirm that the lighting proposed in NCS’s initial survey was the optimal solution, benefiting from the latest technology.
Earlsmann identified several technical issues related to materials used in construction of the school building and adapted the solution to overcome these challenges. It used Relux modelling software to ensure that both primary and emergency lighting would meet CIBSE guidelines for light levels and uniformity across each area.
Tailored LED lighting provides a “clever and strategic solution”
NCS and Earlsmann worked together to provide Trinity School with a best-in-class lighting solution that provides energy savings of around 60% while increasing light levels across the school, enhancing the environment for staff and students. The lighting reduces carbon emissions by around 63 tonnes a year, and lifetime savings in energy and maintenance costs are expected to reach up to £413,000.
The Trinitas Trust is delighted with the new lighting. Operations Director, Sam Luker, said; “this is a really important initiative during times of budget squeeze. Staff have seen lots of installation activity and excellent new lighting but understand that we are not being extravagant and that this is a very clever and strategic solution.”
