LED Lighting is a Winner for Real Tennis Court at Prested Hall in Essex

How many different kinds of tennis could you name? LED specialist Earlsmann is becoming something of an expert in unusual racquet sports – recent projects have included; providing LED lighting for Padel Tennis, Rackets and Real Tennis courts.

LED light is ideally suited to these fast-moving sports; bright, even illumination supports fun and safe play and delivers significant savings in energy and maintenance costs.

LED lighting helps Prested Hall Tennis Club to reach world championship standard

Earlsmann has recently been working with Prested Hall Tennis Club to install new LED lighting at its Real Tennis courts in readiness for the facility to host the sport’s World Challenge in April 2020. Defending champion, Rob Fahey, and his wife Claire (who is also a world champion in the sport), are based at the Club – one of the top venues for Real Tennis worldwide.

Prested had already upgraded the lighting on its show court to LEDs, but the second court still had traditional metal halide lighting. The Club decided to replace this to reduce running costs, and to improve light levels and uniformity – bringing it up to the same standard as the show court in advance of the World Challenge contest.

Earlsmann – expertise in LED lighting for specialist sports facilities

Following a successful project to install new LED lighting at Prested’s Padel courts in Essex, Mike Carter, of Prested Hall Tennis Club, asked Earlsmann to quote for the lighting upgrade at the Real Tennis court. Earlsmann was able to draw on the experience it has gained providing LED lighting for other Real Tennis facilities, including tennis court lighting upgrades at Lords and Hardwick House, and on other projects lighting courts for badminton, squash, Padel and lawn tennis.

Bespoke LED lighting design provides tennis players with a well-lit court

Earlsmann visited the Club and subsequently produced a Relux model design that would provide over 500 lux and an impressive 0.8 uniformity – ensuring well-lit back corners that enable players to make difficult shots. Some of the existing lighting positions needed to be altered, and Earlsmann provided the design for new power circuits to be installed to facilitate this. Earlsmann selected a traditional high-bay style LED luminaire, with aluminium reflectors. This unit significantly reduces glare and improves the playing experience. The design features a combination of 200W and 150W lights to achieve the required uniformity and light level.

Serving up ace savings for Prested Hall Tennis Club

The new LED lighting is providing energy savings of around 70% compared to the old lighting. Earlsmann included a light sensor in the control circuit to maintain the 500 lux level for the life of the luminaires, ensuring longevity and minimising maintenance costs. The lighting offers ‘instant start’ at full brightness (the previous lighting needed to ‘warm up’ gradually before the courts could be used). The lighting was installed by Essex-based contractor Approved Electrical Contracts Limited – a company Earlsmann is building an effective relationship with, having worked together successfully on several projects.
