LED lighting creates round-the-clock savings at 24/7 warehouse

LED lighting is ideal for lighting warehouse facilities – providing high-quality light that supports staff comfort and safety while maximising energy efficiency. LED specialist Earlsmann has recently worked with Sovrin, manufacturer of precision plastic injection moulded components and assemblies, to upgrade the lighting throughout the company’s warehouse.

Before: the old twin batten lighting was ineffective, and created shadows and dark areas   After: the bright, clear new LED lighting supports a safer, more comfortable working environment

LED lighting is the perfect partner for precision manufacturing

Sovrin is a leading manufacturer of precision plastic mouldings to the medical, electronics and engineering industries. Excellent lighting is essential to maintain the highest possible quality standards throughout the manufacturing process – from concept to delivery.

The old lighting across Sovrin’s warehouse areas, which comprised twin six-foot batten fittings, was becoming inefficient to run and did not offer bright and uniform light. Earlsmann was asked to provide new LED lighting to improve illumination across the main warehouse and mezzanine floor areas.

Developing a bespoke LED lighting design with the client

Earlsmann visited the site and discussed the project with the team at Sovrin. The requirement was to provide over 400 lux at one metre from the ground, and to include motion sensors with 20% pre-set dimming level. The automatic dimming helps to maximise savings by decreasing the light level of any area that is not in use. This is an important feature of the design as the lighting is always on; the warehouse operates 24/7.

Earlsmann selected 100W and 200W high-bay LED units for the warehouse and slim low-bay type fittings for the mezzanine. Its design team used Relux modelling software to confirm that the proposed lighting design would provide the required light levels. The solution also included a new emergency lighting system comprising LED twinspot lighting, to comply with the requirements of BS5266 (Emergency Lighting). Earlsmann worked with NCS Technology to provide a seamless installation.

Benefiting from grant funding for LED lighting to maximise savings

Sovrin was able to obtain a grant through the Low Carbon Workspaces local enterprise scheme. This funding covered 33% of the cost of the project – providing an incentive to invest in the new LED lighting and achieving rapid payback. The company is benefiting immediately from significant energy savings, as power usage for lighting has dropped from almost 7kW to 2kW per hour. In addition, the increased reliability and longevity of LEDs compared to traditional lighting will generate ongoing savings in maintenance costs.
