LED lighting is the ideal choice for swimming pools – bright, clear illumination is key to creating safe, welcoming and pleasant facilities. LED specialist Earlsmann recently worked with Storrs Electrical to upgrade lighting at a swimming pool within a school in the West Midlands. The facilities now feature bright, flexible and virtually maintenance-free lighting that provides impressive energy and cost savings.

Changing facilities for the better with LED lighting
Earlsmann was invited by Storrs to provide a complete LED lighting solution for the refurbishment and extension of the school’s swimming pool and changing area, including full emergency lighting. The project encompassed the main pool, wet and dry change areas, showers, corridors and viewing areas.
The client, the Landau Forte Academy QEMS secondary school in Tamworth, required an adaptable solution for lighting the pool area. In addition to bright lighting for normal swimming use, the Academy requested ‘mood lighting’ that could be used to create a different ambience at the pool – for example, for parties when the facilities are hired out (private hire provides an important source of income for the school).
Creating a bespoke LED solution through modelling
Earlsmann used Relux modelling software to determine a solution for both primary and emergency lighting that met CIBSE guidelines for light levels and uniformity across each area (a 5 lux maximum across the entire pool, with 0.5 lux across most other areas). Drawing on its technical expertise and experience of similar projects, Earlsmann selected lights for each area. The shower facilities feature IP65 panels, while other spaces have a combination of panels, downlights and battens.
Benefiting from LED lighting design expertise
For the pool itself, Earlsmann designed and manufactured an asymmetric floodlight to provide the correct light levels and maximise uniformity. These units were set as downlights, and the beam angles were carefully adjusted to ensure lifeguards could see without being dazzled. The design includes RGB colour-changing ribbon LED lighting installed within a ‘pelmet’ around the pool, providing the ability to adapt the lighting to suit pool users.
Investing in LED technology creates significant savings
Earlsmann provided sensors to ensure lights are only on when needed, boosting savings. The new lighting is virtually maintenance-free, has a long lifespan, does not require a warm-up period and provides excellent light levels – creating significant energy and cost savings when compared with traditional lighting solutions.
