LED lighting is the ideal, flexible solution for leisure facilities. For commercial swimming pools, constant light levels are essential to maintain safety and comfort for swimmers, spectators and staff. LED specialist Earlsmann recently designed and supplied new LED lighting for a pool in Buckinghamshire, incorporating wireless control and sensors to deliver high-quality light and boost energy savings.

Earlsmann designs LED solutions around swimming pool user needs
Risborough Springs Swim and Fitness Centre in Princes Risborough is operated by Places Leisure. The company identified that the existing swimming pool LED fittings used around the indoor pool area were failing and not providing sufficient light levels and were becoming increasingly unreliable. Through its successful partnership with the Centre’s installer Approved Electrical, Earlsmann was asked to provide an effective new lighting solution.
Maximising use of natural light to provide a comfortable environment
The pool area has large windows down one side that bring in plenty of natural light. Earlsmann therefore devised a scheme that uses daylight harvesting sensors to support provision of constant light levels, creating a comfortable environment for swimming pool users while minimising energy use. Earlsmann’s designers used Relux software to model the lighting, ensuring that the new scheme would provide over 200 lux with 0.5 uniformity in line with the LG4 sports lighting guidance published by CIBSE.
Intelligent sensor-controlled LED lighting minimises energy use
To support effective control of the new lighting, Earlsmann specified a Bluetooth system by Casambi. This provided best value for money to the client by avoiding the need for a hard-wired system, which would have required extensive re-wiring throughout the building. This intelligent control system is programmed to maintain light levels at the required level of at least 200 lux while keeping energy use to a minimum, reducing the Centre’s running costs and carbon footprint.
Maximising LED lifespan to create best value for money
The new LED lighting system is built to last, with a maintenance factor designed-in that allows for lamp degradation over time. When installed, the new lamps are capable of providing 250 lux. The daylight harvesting sensors communicate with the control system to maintain a constant light level of 200 lux, extending the life of the luminaires by ensuring that they are working below their maximum capacity most of the time.
