Leisure centre’s LED investment set to pay off within 12 months

Approved Electrical partnered with Earlsmann to deliver new LED lighting on this project. Arborfield Leisure Centre is operated by Places Leisure, which was keen to improve its facilities and reduce running costs by replacing the hall’s outdated and unreliable fluorescent lighting units.
Providing a bespoke solution to comply with CIBSE guidelines
This project was unusual as the original fluorescent fittings (five-foot twin units) were installed directly over the edges of the badminton courts as they were laid out. Following discussions with the client, it was decided to move the lights slightly away from the courts, where practical, to comply with good practice.
Earlsmann designed the new scheme using its ‘Lacock’ LED high bay units, and modelled the solution using Relux software to confirm that it meets required light levels in line with CIBSE LG4 guidelines of over 300 lux and 0.7 uniformity. Each lighting unit has been fitted with a 90-degree lens that is specifically designed to provide an excellent cut-off, focusing light where it is needed and keeping glare to a minimum.
Achieving instant energy savings by switching to LED
The original 144 fluorescent fittings have been replaced by just 40 of Earlsmann’s Lacock 150W high bay lights. The energy required to light the facility has reduced from over 101,000 kWhr/year to just under 32,000 kWhr/year. This huge 69,000kWhr/year saving will provide a return on investment within 12 months based on current energy prices, and likely even sooner due to additional cost savings from reduced maintenance.
