Energy-efficient LED lighting upgrade for Witham Leisure Centre.
Earlsmann Lighting recently completed a full lighting upgrade at Witham Leisure Centre, working alongside Approved Electrical Installations to provide a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution that meets current standards. The project was commissioned by Braintree Council and focused on improving both general and emergency lighting performance across the site.
Meeting lighting standards with fewer fittings
The existing installation consisted of 68 twin fluorescent luminaires, totaling approximately 9,000 watts. These were replaced with just 14 high-efficiency 100-watt LED floodlights—reducing the overall power load to 1400 watts, while delivering the required 200 lux lighting level in line with CIBSE Class III recommendations.
The result is a significantly more streamlined lighting system that not only improves visual conditions within the space but also reduces ongoing maintenance and energy costs. With fewer fittings required and a longer lifespan typical of LED technology, the new system offers long-term reliability and operational savings.
Emergency lighting brought up to standard
As part of the project, we also upgraded the emergency lighting provision throughout the centre to meet BS EN 5266, which requires a minimum of 5 lux in relevant areas. The updated emergency fittings ensure compliance with safety regulations and enhance visibility during potential power outages or emergency evacuations.
By replacing ageing and inefficient legacy systems, the new emergency lighting now offers both improved performance and peace of mind.

The installation was carried out by Approved Electrical Installations, with whom we have partnered on several successful projects. Their team ensured a smooth transition from the old system to the new, minimising disruption to the leisure centre’s day-to-day operations.
