New factory lighting system provides energy savings of over 70%
LED lighting is ideal for manufacturing facilities – excellent light levels are vital to support a safe working environment and high-quality products. LED specialist Earlsmann has recently worked with Centreline Machine Guards Ltd to upgrade the lighting at its Wolverhampton-based factory. The new LED lights provide energy savings of over 70% – paying back Centreline’s initial investment within two years.
Before: Traditional SON lighting did not provide the required light levels and was expensive to maintain | After: The new LED lighting has transformed the factory and saves over 70% in energy costs |
Grant funding supports SMEs to upgrade to LEDs
Following an Earlsmann campaign promoting the availability of grants to fund SMEs in green improvements – such as low-energy lighting upgrades – Centreline realised it was eligible and approached Earlsmann to assess its factory lighting. Earlsmann found that the general lighting needed improvement; maintenance costs were rising and light levels fell below guidelines set by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Embracing the change – replacing traditional lighting with LEDs
The existing lighting at Centreline’s factory included 15 low bay lights with 400W SON lamps. Some fittings were not in working order and the rest had suffered depreciation in light output due to age. Earlsmann created a new lighting design using Relux software based on anticipated light levels of around 400 lux and good uniformity. The existing fittings were replaced on a point-for-point basis with Earlsmann’s 135W Tonbridge bay fitting, offering a simplified installation process to minimise disruption. Tonbridge was specifically chosen as there is an internal crane running the length of the facility and the fitting is slim enough to accommodate this.
Cost-effective Factory lighting system offers instant benefits
Earlsmann’s LED solution delivered a significant improvement in light levels and is virtually maintenance-free, while creating savings of over 70% in energy use – providing a return on investment within two years. The new LED factory lighting supports safer working and allows the existing crane to operate. It also cuts CO2 emissions by around ten tonnes a year, boosting Centreline’s environmental credentials.
