Commercial LED Downlights

A range of LED down lights suitable for new installations or for use as replacements for traditional types using compact fluorescent lamps (CFL)

These down lights produce a very high output for their compact size. They emit no UV, run cool and have a service life up to 50,000 hours thus reducing maintenance. Due to their high efficiency, these luminaires are extremely environmentally friendly and will help significantly with carbon reduction programmes.  They are available in a range of wattages and sizes. 3 Watts to 18 Watts for the circular lamps and 20/30Watts for the square.

We have taken some simple in-house measurements to compare our circular LED downlights with a popular Thorn Chalice type luminaire.  We compared the lux level at 1.7m for the Earlsmann 15 watt EG7050 (warm white LED) with the output from the Thorn Chalice downlight with a switch start and 2 x 26 watt CFL fitted.

What we  measured directly below the fitting was 225 lux for the Earlsmann luminaire running at 15 Watts for the fitting whilst the Thorn Chalice version only produced 335 lux using a staggering 68 Watts.  This would indicate the LED luminaire uses ony 1/3 of the energy to provide the same light level. The beam angle for Earlsmann product was wide at 130o but narrower for the Chalice.

It is not possible to simply compare the lumen output of an LED luminaire with traditional lamps due to the way they are specified. Unlike LEDs, the lumens quote for a traditional lamp does not include losses within any ballast or fixture. In some cases over 50% of the energy used is not seen as useful light.
